St Gallen, 8 September 2022. Feeding birds is a joyful hobby for many people and is important for the preservation of local avian diversity. In autumn and winter, especially, people hang up fat balls and regularly fill birdhouses with food. Yet it's not only the birds that benefit from this feeding – rats and mice are also attracted. This happens, in particular, as a result of bird feed falling to the ground, where it can be exploited by the rodents as a food source. A big annoyance, especially since rats and mice love to build nests near such food sources. But that can now be avoided extremely easily! With the "Smart Birds" bird feeder from SWISSINNO. This has a catch tray, which effectively prevents the feed from falling down and offers further advantages for greater safety and hygiene when feeding birds.
Year-round bird feeding is recommended according to environmental educational theory
Due to the intensive cultivation of land for food, the use of pesticides in agriculture and a dramatic loss of insects, there are fewer and fewer food sources for our feathered friends. It is therefore advisable to feed birds all year round. However, the months from April to July are an exception. In many regions, young birds hatch during this time, and conventional bird food, such as sunflower seeds or nuts, can be dangerous for them. This is due, on the one hand, to the high fat content. On the other hand, young birds can choke on nuts and seeds. One way to feed the birds is to switch to other foods, such as small, low-fat seeds or insect feeds. A feed dispenser with two chambers, as in the case of "Smart Birds", is extremely practical, since different types of bird food can be filled at the same time. The robust construction made of durable materials allows year-round use in any weather.
Hygiene and safety when feeding birds
When using conventional feeders, the birds run around in the feed, scattering it on the ground and contaminating it with faeces. The latter is also extremely unsanitary and can lead to the transmission of diseases. This can easily be avoided with a feed dispenser. In addition, the feed in the dispenser does not spoil so quickly and is protected from rain, snow and strong wind. Another advantage of this method is that the feeding station does not have to be cleaned constantly, since there is no old or soaked food.
In order to ensure safety when feeding birds, the feed dispenser should be placed in such a way that cats can't sneak up on it and so as to not be accessible to rodents, like rats and mice. "Smart Birds" can be hung up easily with a wire and thus offers only birds direct access.
Targeted bird feeding with "Smart Birds"
Bird food that is scattered on the ground can attract uninvited guests, such as rats or mice. It is therefore necessary to repeatedly remove fallen feed when using birdhouses. This is both annoying and a waste of unused feed, since it, of course, cannot be refilled into the birdhouse for hygienic reasons. With "Smart Birds" , there is no such problem. The catch tray that is used efficiently prevents bird food from falling to the ground. Even with particularly "untidy" birds or strong winds, hardly any feed is lost, which also means no source of food for rats or mice on the ground. You can therefore save roughly 50% on feed and do not attract annoying pests. "Smart Birds" has already passed long-term tests in which the effectiveness of the new feed house was examined. The concept works, the floor is kept clean, and rodents lose interest in the feeding site.
